Dubrovskiy talks to Top Management of Russian Railways about construction of Chelyabinsk-Yekaterinburg high speed network

November 26, 2015

The Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region took part in yesterday's meeting in Moscow among the Management Board of Russian Railways and Public Council for Russian High Speed Traffic chaired by Russian Railways President Oleg Belozyorov and Public Council Cochairperson, First Deputy Chairperson of the State Duma Aleksandr Zhukov.

Alternatively, Chelyabinsk-Yekaterinburg high speed railway network will be a part of Moscow-Beijing transport corridor. The project involves construction of a new double-track line between the centers of two regions which will shorten travel time to 60 minutes. «For reference, today the travel time by train is 5 hours and by bus — 3 hours 55 minutes,» said Boris Dubrovskiy. The network will accommodate five stations: Yekaterinburg, Koltsovo Airport, Kasli, Chelyabinsk and Chelyabinsk International Airport. As planned, a multimodal transfer hub will appear in Kasli. The estimated passenger flow of the high speed network will be 2.7 million people per annum.

«The project draws on a unique competitive advantage of the Ural Region: two cities with population exceeding one million spaced less than 200 km apart. With one hour travel time, they will form a Russian agglomeration with over 3 million residents accommodating Ozyorsk, Snezhinsk, Kasli, Kyshtym, Kopeysk and Sysert in addition to two centers, Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk. These cities have both ample human resources of the industrial Ural Region and unique infrastructure potential,» emphasized the Governor.

To benefit from the above potential, Snezhinsk and Ozyorsk will turn into zones of advanced social and economic development hosting new production facilities. Boris Dubrovskiy emphasized that next year, the Governments of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk Regions would allocate 50 million rubles each to implement the project.

!Such sweeping infrastructure projects belong to one of the most important strategic areas of development of the Chelyabinsk Region. This project also keeps with the idea of conducting SCO Summit in Chelyabinsk in 2020 supported by RF President Vladimir Putin. That is why this project turns into a political issue,» said Boris Dubrovskiy.

The President of Russian Railways Oleg Belozyorov encouraged the regional authorities to take part in development and implementation of the high speed network projects.

«I highly appreciate your efforts and believe that the support at the regional level is a guarantee of a responsible approach and successful completion of the project,» he said.
