Chelyabinsk Regional Universal Scientific Library is one of the oldest in the Urals. According to its funds the library is one of the top ten largest libraries of Russia.
It was opened more than a century ago as a free city library and reading hall and was used mainly by petty bourgeois and peasants.
In 1963 the main library moved to a specially constructed building on Lenina prospekt. Some researchers think that the prototype of Chelyabinsk library was the architectural image of the American public library in Cleveland. Today the premises of the library are considered the local architectural monument. The library has more than 2 mln of printed items, its funds are part of the national cultural heritage. The library stores the unique collections of rare prerevolutionary books, local history and foreign literature, printed music, national periodicals.
One can find unique manuscripts and printed books, among them: “Dioptra” (1612), “Grammar” by Melenty Smotritsky (1648), “Ostrog Bible” of Ivan Fedorov (1581). By the way, the last was published in Ostrog in 1581. Up to 300 copies scattered around the world are preserved till now. Not every library can boast such acquisition, but Chelyabinsk library bought “Ostrog Bible” from one of Satka residents who discovered a precious book among the belongings of his late grandmother.
For those who like foreign literature the library offers the books with the marks of William Duke of Braunswick, Günther – the Prince of Waldenburg Castle, books from the library of the Construction School of Berlin, the Royal School of Arts of Berlin, the Royal Library of Hannover, etc.
Chelyabinsk Regional Universal Scientific Library is the member of the Russian Association of Libraries, awarded with the diploma “Best Library of RSFSR” (1968), Certificate of Honor issued by the General Committee of the Supreme Soviet of RSFSR (1974) and other awards.
