Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant is part of the «Mechel» Group, the leading mining and metal manufacturing company.
The integrated plant’s history is inseparably connected with the establishment and development of the country’s defense enterprises. Space and aircraft, power, nuclear-power, heavy, chemical, automotive and agricultural engineering, bearing plants and tube-rolling plants, construction, medical equipment and tools… These are just a few items in the CHMK products application list.
Ten days before the Great Patriotic War began, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR adopted Resolution on the Bakalsky Iron and Steel Works construction (Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant now). The plant completed its first melting of metal on April 19, 1943. Every fifth artillery shell, every third Soviet tank and wartime airplane were produced of steel made in Chelyabinsk.
During the post-war period, further development of Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant continued within the complex design-assignment framework aimed at manufacturing high-quality rolled sections, hot- and cold-rolled stainless steel sheets, heat-resisting steel forgings and production of special steels. There is much in the national metallurgy that was first mastered at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant.
Currently all process stages of an integrated iron and steel works such as chemical recovery in the coking process, blast-furnace process, steelmaking process, special electrometallurgy, rolling process and a wide range of engineering services, are incorporated into Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant.
The «Mechel» Group’s management developed an investment program commencing in 2009, with $2.9 billion invested over four years (up to 2012) for the projects implementation. The priority project in metallurgical segment is construction of the universal rail and structural shapes steel mill at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant which started in 2008. Commissioning of the universal mill would enable the enterprise to increase the output of high-quality rolled products and rails.
