Ilmensky Festival is the largest open air art song concert in Russia. By right it is considered to be a significant cultural event in the life of the country. It has been held since 1973 on the shore of Ilmenskoye Lake near the city Miass of the Chelyabinsk region. From 1983 till 1986 the festival was forbidden by the authorities, in 1989 and 1990 it was held in another location.
Traditionally, several creative grounds operate within the frame of the festival. They are “Major Stage”, “Forest Ground” and “Children Republic”. The audience of “Ilmenka” exceeds 40 thousand people. The peculiarity of the festival is its openness and accessibility to everyone regardless of age and social status. Part of people live in brick buildings of a tourist camp, but the majority of spectators pitch tents among pine trees. One can hear guitar songs not only from stages but also in every tent camp.
For many years the festival has been connected with the name of people’s artist of Russia Oleg Mityaev. The song “How great we have gathered here today” with which Mityaev became a laureate of Ilmensky Festival in 1978 is a hymn of bard movement in Russia. The festival itself broadened its creative format long time ago and now it is connected not only with a bard song.
The festival know-how is invitation of special guests. Among them are popular actors, directors, producers, singers, and public figures. In the concert “Oleg Mityaev presents…” in different years Dmitry Kharatyan, Irina Khakamada, Vladimir Kristovsky (band "UMA2RMAN"), Tamara Gverdtsiteli, Vyacheslav Butusov, Veniamin Smekhov, Yury Stoyanov, Nikita Vysotsky and Valery Syutkin took part. There is live broadcast of “Ilmenki” on the Internet.
The organizers of the festival are the Government of the Chelyabinsk region, Fund of Oleg Mityaev and administration of Miass city.
